Personality; Jessica has abandonment issues from when she was little and for this reason does not make friends easily as she fears people are going to leave her just when she comes to be attached to them. Jessica believes your word is your bond and saying you will do something is equivalent to a promise. Jessica is a loyal and loving friend but due to her issues if you hurt her or betray her then it is unlikely she will ever be able to let you back in her life in the same way.

Jessica is happy girl who spends most of her time determined to enjoy life. She trusts her brother explicitly and still turns to him for advice and when she is scared. She also is close to Loralie who has been her brother's friend since he was five. Jessica is an open-minded girl who believes in fair play and while people must earn respect you should give everyone a chance and not judge anyone before you get to know them. She does not think you should hate anyone, even mean people.

Background;

Marnia and Joseph Carter were a magical couple. Marnia was a muggleborn witch and Joseph a half-blood wizard. They had attempted to adopt through the magical system but had waited a long time with no results. Marnia suggested they put their name down for a muggle adoption agency because what harm could it do. Shortly after that they got a phone call saying they had been accepted and inviting them to attend an open day at an orphanage. When they arrived they saw a six year old girl sitting by herself on the front step, crying because she had fallen and skinned her knee. The informed them her brother was inside getting a plaster and showed them the scrape with all the dramatic seriousness of a small child. Marnia comforted her and the couple instantly knew they wanted this girl to be the daughter.

The girl was Jessica Rolf. She had been the product of a one night stand her mother, Margret Rolf, had with a random guy she met. Her mother was now serving time in prison for stealing and her father had never been in the picture. Jessica was very attached to her brother Felix, who was five years older than herself, but the couple were not looking for more than one child so they took the decision to adopt Jessica alone. They knew it would be hard but felt she was young enough to adjust to the change.

Jessica did find it hard to adjust. To make it easier Maria and Joseph allowed her to keep her old surname, attached to their own, and spend time with her brother. Jessica slowly adjusted and soon began to see her new parents as family just like her brother though she could never love them quite as much as him. From this point Jessica had a stable, normal childhood with loving parents who raised her with an appreciation for magic and muggle. She was enrolled in a school, joined the junior cheerleading team and looked forward to Hogwarts with excitement.

However on the day she was due to leave for Hogwarts Jessica fell off her bike and fractured her arm. Her parents took her to a muggle hospital so that her injury would be on record. This was a requirement of all adopted children to prevent abuse. However it meant the arm took longer to heal and it was months before Jessica had full use of her arm. Her parents had put off sending her to Hogwarts until she was completely healed. So it was early March before she was finally allowed to go.

Jessica sat in bed pondering her future time at Hogwarts. She was reading a book, one-handed, and missing the fact she could not be there already. She had thought about what house she would be in lots of times. Going backwards and forwards but each time coming back to Hufflepuff. She was sure she lacked the bravery for Gryffindor, the brains for ravenclaw and the ambition for Slytherin. She was determined to be a Hufflepuff.
