Personality;
Personality; Ash is a very physical guy. He believes in actions over words, and isn't overly fond of just having serious conversations and talking things through. He'd rather just settle things by acting. He also tends to compartmentalize, and doesn't talk about his problems with people who aren't immediately related to it. Therefore, it wouldn't be surprising if his own wife didn't know about his family. However, he does love to joke around, and tends to tease people a bit - especially his little sister and his wife. To people who don't know him, he can actually seem insulting, but it's all said in good humor.

Though he's not much for talking about feelings, he's actually very emotional - and generally pretty straightforward about it. However, he doesn't generally explain the reason behind it. He has anger problems, and is very protective of those he cares about - especially Cherise and Selena. He doesn't get close to many people, but when he does he will consider you to be a friend for life. He doesn't seem to care what people think of him and just does what he wants. Though, to a degree, he does enjoy being seen as a tough guy, and doesn't let people see other sides of him - the more caring sides. But, for the most part, he couldn't care less. He'll go out to dinner in the same oily clothes he's been working in, or he'll start making out with Cherise in public. He's also rather peculiar in some ways, and doesn't care. For example, he's not overly fond of holidays. It's not that he doesn't like them, but he's not exactly hyped over them.

Ash was born into a pureblood family, but was then put into a foster family with a muggle father. He taught him all about muggle technology and, especially, about mechanics. Ash was fascinated, and now has quite a thing for cars. He really enjoys his work, fixing them up, and knows his way around the engine like the back of his hand.

Background;

Jack and Maria married in a rush as fear of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was building, after it became clear that his rebirth wasn't a lie. They started having kids just as quickly, and had their son within a year. But the war was not going to permit them a happy-ever-after.

Jack was pretty high up in the ministry, and had the ear of leaders. Therefore, he was a natural target to the Death Eaters. He was put under the imperious curse in the effort to gain control of the Ministry, and he stayed that way for the duration of the war. The Death Eater controlling him died during the final battle at Hogwarts, freeing Jack from the curse. But he regained control of his mind only to find the horror of what he'd done. Acting in the Death Eater's names, he'd done a lot of horrible things, and killed a lot of innocent people. Worst of all, he'd killed his own wife when she'd come too close to the truth.

Ash was barely a year old by the end of the war, and has no memory of his mother or all the crimes his father committed. But he was raised with a tortured father. Jack escaped Azkaban, with it being rather self-evident that he'd been under the imperious curse (it was plainly obvious that he was wracked by guilt). But he never stopped punishing himself. He couldn't hold his job at the ministry, or any other. He got disability pay, and that combined with what money they'd had saved up was enough to sustain them, albeit rather poorly.

Jack clearly adored his son, and took good care of him. But he was rather insane, and would see things and sometimes start yelling and raving. He never really hurt Ash, but he sometimes scared him or yelled at him for no reason. He always felt guilty later, and would apologize profusely. Ash loved his father, and he knew his dad loved him as well, so he did his best to keep his father's condition a secret. To some degree, he took care of his dad just as much as the other way around.

But, when Ash was 14, his dad had a particularly bad episode and slapped Ash, something he'd never done before. He'd seemed to think that Ash was someone else. Ash ran out before his dad snapped back and apologized, extremely upset, and confessed to a counselor what had happened. His dad had insisted he see a counselor, knowing that he was a rather messed up father but not willing to give up his son and wanting Ash to have help if he needed it, so Ash had known her his whole life. But the counselor must have told the cops. Ash's dad was whisked away to a mental facility and Jack spent the next couple of years in the foster system.

He shuffled homes for a while, and had a couple of really screwed up families. But he spent the last couple of years in a pretty stable home with one other kid - a younger girl. He became very close to the family, considering them practically his own. He loved his foster sister and was very protective of her. His father was a muggle, and provided Ash's really first experience into the muggle world. It was from him that Ash learned about cars and mechanics, which Ash instantly fell in love with.

However, he never forgot his birth dad, and still cares very much for him. His new foster family let him visit his father, and Ash did so as often as possible, and still does. Overall, things were pretty good with his new family, although things were a bit rough for his sister for a while. She had an abusive boyfriend who cheated on her, hit her, and wound up sending her to the hospital - on Christmas day. Somehow or other, the boyfriend wound up in the hospital as well and the family never heard from him again.

Ash had a tendency to compartmentalize his life, and considered Hogwarts to be a whole different world. He didn't talk about his home life at all, even with his friends. He never really lied to them, but it wouldn't surprise him if they still didn't know much of what happened in his life, despite still being in touch with them. He met Cherise in school, and they started dating pretty young and married almost as soon as she graduated. He also got to know the rest of her band, though never got quite as close to them - he's more comfortable around guys than girls, save Cherise.
